The Department of Molecular Biology and Biotechnology is a theoretical and applied field of biological sciences for the benefit of mankind. The department encompasses the distinct branches of research namely cell biology, molecular biology and tissue culture. They are also interdependent with disciplines such as Plant Physiology and Genetics. The department works for unravelling the various signalling pathways in plants, development of molecular markers for breeding, identification of candidate genes for stress tolerance and yield improvement, and development of tissue culture techniques for clonal propagation of elite genotypes.
Objectives of Department
The department works with the following objectives
i.To give students a theoretical knowledge on the vital mechanisms occurring in the cell
ii.To give insight into the various advances in molecular biology research
iii.To provide practical exposure on various techniques and instrumentation used in cell biology research
iv.Hands-on training for the plant tissue culture techniques for both students and entrepreneurs
v.Undertaking of basic research and generation of high impact factor publications
Courses Offered
The courses offered are collaboratively undertaken by the Departments of Plant Breeding and Genetics, and Plant Physiology
